For Chemistry Division, facilities are in a very real sense the foundation upon which division operations are built. Without safe, well-maintained facilities, there would be no science.

Chemistry Division facilities house many unique activities, such as the hot cells at Technical Area 48 where staff separate and package medical radioisotopes not produced anywhere else in the world. Several other Chemistry Division sites are also engaged in material and physical chemistry research that has global significance.

Many of the division’s research labs were built thirty or more years ago, with some major ones being almost 60 years old. Modernization and replacement will allow the division’s world-class research to take place in up-to-date buildings.

Some recent additions to the division include a new two-story office building at Technical Area 46, and the Isotope Production Facility (IPF) of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center LANSCE beam-spur (upper right), completed in 2004.

Several projects are currently in the planning stage. One is a desperately-needed replacement for the Laboratory’s aging Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) facility. The CMR replacement project is one of the most significant developments in nuclear chemistry facilities at the Laboratory. An exciting project at the Laboratory level is the Los Alamos Science Complex, which will be constructed over the next ten years. Phase I (middle right) will house approximately 1,400 workers. The Science Complex will provide Los Alamos with nonradiological scientific facilities in a state-of-the-art multipurpose and multi-disciplinary campus setting. A plan for transforming Technical Area 48 into a modern radiological research facility is also underway.

A new beam spur and target station at LANSCE, known as the Isotope Production Facility, was comissioned in 2004. It produces medical isotopes for use in vital diagnostic procedures, and radioisotopes for both research and national defense.

The Los Alamos Science Complex will replace many existing structures and will house some Chemistry operations.

This conceptual drawing shows the new Technical Area 48 infrastructure that will eventually replace the aging structures currently in use. Radiological activities from throughout the Lab will be consolidated in this new complex.
