A radiochemically-separated sample is loaded into the ion source of a mass separator. Alkali species are thermally ionized, electrostatically extracted, mass separated, and implanted into a catcher foil located inside a glass cell. Heating the foil causes atoms to be released into the glass cell where they are trapped in a magneto-optical trap. The trapped atoms can then be transferred to a second chamber where experiments are carried out.
