Cooling and Trapping of Atoms at Los Alamos National Laboratory
Field(s): atomic physics, nuclear chemistry, laser physics, nuclear

Job Description: Postdoctoral Positions in Experimental Physics/Chemistry
- PD016221
The Nuclear and Radiochemistry
Group (C-INC) in the Chemistry (C) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory
is seeking postdoctoral candidates to perform research involving the
optical and magnetic trapping of selected radioactive atoms. The successful
applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team composed of atomic
physicists, nuclear physicists, and nuclear chemists. Our research is
concentrated on fundamental electroweak interaction measurements (beta-decay
asymmetry and beta-neutrino correlations of polarized atoms) and on
the sympathetic cooling and Fermi degeneracy studies of cold atoms.
The ultra-sensitive detection and quantitative isotopic ratio measurements
of selected species is also under development.
Applicants must be dedicated
and have a strong background in experimental physics and/or chemistry
with experience in using single-frequency lasers and in performing high-precision
atomic spectroscopic measurements. Expertise in cold atom physics using
laser and/or magnetic trapping techniques is highly desirable. A second
postdoctoral opening is also available to candidates with a nuclear
science background. In particular, we are interested in applicants with
experience in mass separators, low-level beta and gamma counting, and
nuclear structure or weak interaction physics.
For additional technical
information, please contact Dr. Xinxin Zhao at xxz@lanl.gov
or Dr. David Vieira at vieira@lanl.gov.
A Ph.D. completed within
the last three years or soon to be completed is required. Candidates
may compete for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may
be considered for the prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard P.
Feynman or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
