Alpha-Spec Pu Sample Preparation: Electroplating

The plutonium is eluted from the column with a hydrochloric/hydroiodic acid solution. The solution is evaporated to dryness. The sample is re-dissolved in a sodium sulfate solution and electroplated onto a stainless steel planchette. Approximately 3,000 samples per year are prepared for alpha-spectroscopy analysis.
